Eddie Murphy wants there to be a standalone Donkey movie in the Shrek Cinematic Universe

Eddie Murphy wants there to be a standalone Donkey movie in the Shrek Cinematic Universe

The actor says he would reprise the role in 'two seconds'.

Eddie Murphy is dead keen on reprising his iconic role of Donkey in the Shrek Cinematic Universe.

The legendary comedian and actor was asked about his thoughts on whether we'd ever get to see Shrek 5 in the cinemas.

“I’d absolutely be open if they ever came with another Shrek, I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey," he said in an interview with Etalk.

A fifth Shrek film was announced back in 2016, but we're yet to see any movement in Tinseltown.

However, Murphy says his character could even have his own movie.

"You know, they did Puss in Boots movies," he said.

"I was like, ‘They should have did a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey.”

Murphy added: “I would do a Donkey movie. I would do another Shrek in two seconds.”

The 61-year-old was told to pull some strings in Hollywood to get that project off the ground and he said the movie studio would have to meet him halfway.

“That’s Dreamworks Animation," he said in his chat with Etalk.

"They have to want to do it. Dreamworks, if you all want to do it, just call me. I’m ready, I’m sitting and ready to do Donkey.”

We were told back in 2017 that if Shrek 5 did make it to the big screen then it would be a bit different to what we're used to.

Screenwriter Michael McCullers told The Hollywood Reporter: "I finished that script, which I really, really, really love.

"It's really personal to me. It's got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can't reveal."

He went on to say: "Reinvention was sort of called for. There's been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they're great characters, but you also have to think of a pretty new take at that point."

At least we know the main actors are keen on coming back.

We've already got Eddie Murphy waiting for a call-up, and Puss in Boots star Antonio Banderas is also keen on reprising his role.

He told Deadline in December: “The first time I did Puss In Boots, I was working on Broadway, so I did my first session there. I’ve done five movies now. There is probably gonna be another, and Shrek is probably coming back."

Mike Myers also revealed to GQ last year: "If I had to do one Shrek a year I’d be thrilled."

We just need Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona and we're all set for another wild adventure.
