Born in Los Angeles, Moss was a keen dancer as a child and was educated in dance techniques, even studying ballet at the prestigious School of American Ballet. However, her professional dance career was short-lived as she quickly began to attract acting roles in her youth. Her acting career commenced on the small screen, appearing in a number of TV series in the early 1990s. Gradually she transitioned to the silver screen, though it wasn’t until 1999, when she appeared in James Mangold’s Girl, Interrupted, that she became a hit.
Even with a decade of acting under her belt, Moss struggled to make headway in the early 2000s but appeared in adverts which kept residual income coming her way as she strove for bigger film roles. In the latter half of the decade, she made her Broadway debut in Speed-the-Plough as well as finding work in further TV series and as a supporting actress in a number of films. Throughout the 2010s Moss continued her theatrical work whilst simultaneously ramping up her engagement with TV and film. Since 2017, she has played Offred in The Handmaid’s Tale for which she received a Primetime Emmy Award for Leading Actress in a Drama Series.
With the recent confirmation of a fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale, fans are now wondering how lucrative Moss’ tri-decade spanning career has been.
What Is Elisabeth Moss’ Net Worth?
It goes without saying that the vast majority of Moss’ capital comes from acting, be it theatrical or on-screen. From as early as 2007 she was pocketing significant sums for her role in Mad Men, $75,000 (£62,000) per episode as reported by Celebrity Net Worth. But that is merely pocket change compared to the whopping $1 million (£830,000) she earns each episode for The Handmaid’s Tale. Money Inc. claims that Moss has made $24 million (£19.8 million) from her appearances in the show. Compounding her TV earnings, Moss’ big screen work has also lined her pockets rather well with The Invisible Man (2020) boosting her annual income to a fresh $16 million (£13.2 million).
Moss is a high-profile feminist and, slightly controversially, also practices scientology, the pseudo-religion which other actors such as Tom Cruise and John Travolta also follow. The Handmaid’s Tale is wrapped in politics and religion so Moss has had to discuss the relationship between her beliefs in The Church of Scientology and the show, including issues surrounding the Church’s views on homosexuality, although Moss stated that she is a “huge supporter of the LGBTQ community”.
