So you've made one of the most controversial TV specials of 2018 - how do you follow that? Well, if you're Derren Brown, you return promptly with a brand spanking new series. Yes, the master manipulator of the mind is back in October with a Netflix show called Sacrifice.

Brown took to social media to announce the new show's release date (19 October), tweeting:

The self-proclaimed'mentalist' made a switch from Channel 4 to the streaming site earlier this year and the new series is set to follow on from the Channel 4 special The Push.

That show, which was also added to streaming service Netflix back in February, saw Brown attempting to convince someone to commit murder. A cheery one, then.

In Sacrifice, Brown will attempt to draw from his range of psychological tricks to dramatically change the prejudices of one man. Sounds complicated? Not 'alf. The aim is to fashion a scenario where the man will have to make a choice about whether he can make the ultimate sacrifice - can he lay down his life for a complete stranger? I suppose we'll just have to watch the bloody thing to find out.

Sacrifice marks Brown's first special to have been filmed exclusively for Netflix, and speaking to Graham Norton on his Radio 2 show earlier this month, he talked about making the switch to the streaming platform.

He said: "It feels... in some ways it's different. After years of Channel 4, they knew how we made the shows, in terms of things like the duty of care to the person going through it, if it's a big, dark stunt.

"So we kind of had tracks that we slotted into to make sure all that was in place, but with Netflix, we're having to explain to them as much about how we make the shows as with fitting in with what they require as well.

"They're brilliant and supportive, but they're also just further away, they're in America. So we've been entrusted a lot."

It's yet another intense piece of work to rank alongside his already mind-boggling array of stunts. Hypnosis, Russian roulette, seances... he's done the lot, and more. After the furore surrounding The Push, I think we can definitely say we've had an indication as to just how far Sacrifice is likely to go.
