It's been 25 years since youth ice hockey team the Mighty Ducks took the world by storm by beating the Hawks in the state championship. Not in real life, obviously, but in the movie The Mighty Ducks, which starred Emilio Estevez as the accidental coach of this team of misfits. Let's remind ourselves:

It was a triumphant, jubilant moment in the film that heavily favoured the underdog - or should that be underducks? - and which remains a joy to watch to this day. We won't talk about its two sequels. They bring back bad memories.

So the news that The Mighty Ducks is being primed for a return to our screens in the form of a new TV series is music to our ears.

According to The Hollywood Reporter - who got the information from 'sources' - ABC Signature Studios is in early development for a series based on the original film, although a network isn't yet attached.

Details are a little bit fuzzy, given that there isn't even a script yet, but Tracy Underwood, the head of AMC Signature Studios, has put The Mighty Ducks in development after she was approached by Steven Brill, the screenwriter of the original trilogy, and Jordan Kerner, who produced them.

By all accounts, Brill would be the one who would write the script of the new series, too. There's no word yet on whether Estevez would reprise his role, but because a script has yet to be written he's not currently attached to the project. Which makes sense.

We don't yet know whether the new series will be a sequel or a remake, but we kind of hope it's the former, given how great the original is. And you know the old saying - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. How many more reboots of popular movies does the world need?

Still, it's probably going to be a while before we find out any concrete information. We don't even know if Disney will keep it for their own soon-to-be-launching streaming or whether it's going to be shopped around to other networks.

Either way, even though it's early days, we're trying to not get too excited, but GODDAMMIT WE'RE EXCITED. QUACK! QUACK! QUACK! GO DUCKS!
