Sequel To The Greatest Showman Is In The Works, Confirms Director

A sequel to the hugely popular movie The Greatest Showman is currently in the works, it has been confirmed.

Speaking to the Sun, director Michael Gracey confirmed that he and star Hugh Jackman had initiated the process, saying: "When a movie becomes as big a success as this, it's only natural there is demand for a sequel.

"So those discussions have started and we are working on one right now."

Gracey was in London to support Jackman, who opened this year's Brit Awards with a song from the surprise hit musical - the movie's soundtrack wasn't nominated, but its popularity meant the performance provided a suitably spectacular opening to the ceremony.

Discussing the success of The Greatest Showman, the director admitted it had been a difficult project to get off the ground.

"There were huge doubts about it for a very long time and some backers withdrew their money," he told the Sun.

However, earlier this month the movie won the Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, while the songs have gone down a storm with audiences, as the official cast recording became the longest-running soundtrack to top the UK albums charts in 50 years.

Last month, Jackman admitted he would be open to a sequel, but claimed he was unsure as to whether it would come about.

During an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Jackman said: "If a genuine opportunity came up where it felt like the right thing to do, then yep, I'd get the top hat back out."

Initially released back in December 2017, The Greatest Showman was inspired by the story of 19th century showman P. T. Barnum's creation of the Barnum & Bailey Circus and the lives of its star attractions.

In November 2018, the Australian performer announced his first ever world tour - called The Man. The Music. The Show. - which will see him perform songs from musicals such as The Greatest Showman and Les Misérables, as well as many more numbers from various Broadway musicals and films - all accompanied by a full orchestra.

The tour will be hitting the UK in May and June, this year, with shows at the Manchester Arena (on 24 May), Birmingham's Resorts World Arena (27 May) and London's 02 Arena (3 and 7 June).
