Yippee-ki-yay, motherf*****s - the once long-running debate over whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie has already been settled.

Taking the matter into its own hands, 20th Century Fox settled the confusion with an updated trailer for the film, describing it as 'the greatest Christmas story ever told'.

In the rejigged trailer, we hear the voice-over describing John McClane's (Bruce Willis) predicament: "He just wants to spend Christmas with the family.

"But when he gets stuck at the office party, it'll be a holiday he'll never forget."

But the most crystal clear message of all comes when the voice over declares: "This Christmas get ready to jingle some bells, and deck the halls with boughs of Holly.

"Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman - together in the greatest Christmas story ever told."

Case closed.

Although John McTiernan's iconic action-thriller has featured on every self-respecting fan's list of Christmas movies for years, the confusion over whether it was officially a festive flick was never officially settled until now.

The point made in the against argument surrounds the fact that Die Hard is first and foremost an action film, featuring plenty of guns, explosions and quippy one-liners.

The movie itself made an action hero out of Willis, and none have come close to the high-octane storytelling and character developments that have made McTiernan's the most important movie within the action genre.

The late Alan Rickman's villainous Hans Gruber is pure perfection too, if we do say so ourselves.

However, there are a load of reasons why it's the greatest in the Xmas genre as well, one of those being it features enough merry musings to fill your stockings with.

The trailer highlighted one of the best - Rickman belting out McClane's message, "Now I have a machine gun, ho-ho-ho."

Not to mention, it includes the best use of Christmas wrapping tape. Ever.

Meanwhile, Die Hard goes rogue with the Christmas music, featuring a unique soundtrack including Run DMC's "Christmas In Hollis".

But most importantly, it's just an absolute classic film that doesn't take itself too seriously. Not only has it stood the test of time within the action genre, but it's a break from the norm when it comes to festive films and that's why people love to watch it at this time of year.

Die-Hard avoids the schmaltzy festive sentiments served up in every Christmas movie of the era. Sometimes you need a break from the mince pies and merriness to just watch Bruce Willis blow up some stuff. And if that's not what the festive spirit is all about then bah, humbug to you all!
