Chadwick Boseman's stance on new Black Panther as David Jonsson announced as T'Challa's son

There's a new Black Panther in town and his name is David Jonsson, as Marvel announced that Ryan Coogler would be coming back to make Black Panther 3.

The role was initially played by the late, great Chadwick Boseman but the actor died from cancer in 2020 at the age of 43, having been diagnosed in 2016 but deciding not to make the matter public.

A significant outpouring of grief followed his death as he as a much-loved performer, and the second Black Panther film focused heavily on what they were going to do without his character T'Challa since the decision was made that the character in the MCU would die with the actor.

The decision caused some discussion as some thought it was a tribute to Boseman while others reckoned that it wouldn't be an insult to recast the role when Black Panther is one of Marvel's main heroes.

Chadwick's brother Derrick recently told TMZ he thinks it'd be a good idea to keep Black Panther going because the character is a role model for black audiences and is a positive influence.

Jonsson is not going to be playing the same T'Challa as Boseman, as instead he'll take on the role of the character's son and heir in Wakanda.

Derrick said that his brother 'never explicitly expressed his wishes, before his death, about what should happen with the character', but he thinks that Chadwick would have wanted it this way.

He said that his brother 'thought T'Challa was bigger than just himself as one guy' and understood the power the character had as a positive influence, so he reckons a new Black Panther with someone else taking up the mantle would have been good with him.

Boseman made his MCU debut not in his own movie but in Captain America: Civil War, where he joined the side of the superhero schism that supported heroes putting themselves under government oversight.

He got plenty of scenes in his introductory movie where Marvel took many of their toys and smashed them together in a big airport fight sequence, and his solo movie was a box office success too.

In 2018 Boseman's character appeared on screens in the first Black Panther movie and in Avengers: Infinity War, with the movie's climactic final battle taking place in his kingdom of Wakanda.

Unfortunately for T'Challa he was in the unlucky half of MCU characters who got snapped into dust by Thanos at the end of that movie, and was only brought back by Hulk near the end of the following year's Avengers: Endgame.

Sadly that was the last we saw of Boseman in the MCU as he died the following year, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever dealt heavily with the legacy of the character and the actor himself.

His brother Derrick thinks that Chadwick would have approved of the recast and the character continuing.

Black Panther 3 is scheduled to release in cinemas on 15 December, 2028.
