Blair Witch Project 'actually showed' the witch but everyone missed it as film added to Netflix

Fans think the actual witch was shown in The Blair Witch Project, now available to watch on Netflix

A popular fan theory about The Blair Witch Project has suggested that the true identity of the witch was there all along.

The 1999 horror, now available to watch on UK Netflix, follows three student filmmakers, Heather, Josh, and Mike, who travel to the small town of Burkittsville, Maryland, to investigate the legend of the Blair Witch, a local murderer.

Despite warnings from residents, they hike into the Black Hills forest to interview residents to try to find out if there is any legitimacy to the legend.

After heading into the forest, things take a frightening turn when they become lost, tormented and ultimately presumed dead.

With a solid 86 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating, The Blair Witch Project has been praised over the years for how well made it was, blurring the line between a documentary and a movie.

In a recent online discussion, however, one Reddit user has come up with a theory that the witch was actually an elderly woman shown in the film.

Specifically, they point towards a woman they interview called Mary Brown, who claimed to have witnessed the Blair Witch.

"I think that the crazy shut-in woman who claimed to have seen the witch as a child was in fact the witch all along," the user suggests.

"It is clearly shown that she is mentally unstable during the interview and while in the car Heather mentions that she also made several other ridiculous claims that seem to boast her self-perceived fame."

Possibly attempting to manipulate the group, the user adds: "When hearing about how these kids are investigating the legend she decides to use them as a way to finally get her recognition, something she does by stalking, terrorising, and murdering them in the woods.

"She then is the one who collected the tapes and turned them into the police so that she could finally be seen in the spotlight and also prove to everyone that she is not crazy."

While not everyone was on board with the theory, what isn't really up for debate is how people are still up for watching it even to this day.

Taking to X, one person wrote: "My all-time favourite food footage horror film, The Blair Witch Project is now streaming on Netflix."

"Years later and this is still the best found footage film ever made," another penned.

"There is always the complaint you hear from new viewers that not enough happens, but it's not really about what happens in the world.

"It's about what happens to the characters and in their minds."

"The way it is presented, as the footage taken by 3 missing film-makers, is so simple yet pure genius," a third wrote.
