Christopher Nolan’s newest film is set to be a $250,000,000 epic with one of the most star-studded casts of all time and we know now when it is coming out.

Bit by bit Christopher Nolan has become the most must-watch director around, with films like Inception and Interstellar remaining a non-stop source of fan theories and Oppenheimer earning both a billion dollars and his first Oscar win.

Next up, however, the director will be tackling arguably the most influential story of all time, The Odyssey.

The literary classic Greek story has been attempted several times in film and TV, rarely to much success, but now Nolan will try to be the director to bring the 1000-year-old story to a new generation.

The film has a star-studded cast full of both Nolan alumni and fan favourites.

Matt Damon will star as Odysseus in his third film with Nolan, and is joined in the cast by Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal.

Add to that Elliot Page, Cosmo Jarvis, Mia Goth, Ryan Hurst, Benny Safdie, and Corey Hawkins, and it is a cast list that competes with Avengers films for A-list names.

The story of The Odyssey follows Odysseus returning home after the ten-year Trojan War, a journey which takes him an additional ten years.

In this time, in which he encounters both gods and monsters, he is assumed to be dead and his son Telemachus must deal with a number of problematic suitors to his mother’s hand.

Though no other castings have been confirmed yet, it is widely expected that Holland will play Telemachus.

Fans have actually gotten the first teaser for the film so far, but we can’t show you it here.

That is because it hasn’t released online (legally at least) and is playing before Jurassic World: Rebirth in cinemas.

The movie’s reported $250,000,000 budget would make it the joint most expensive of Nolan’s career along with The Dark Knight Rises.

The film will be a world first too technically, becoming the first to be entirely filmed with IMAX cameras.

These cameras, also used extensively in Sinners, mean that it will be made to be watched on the biggest screen possible.

The Dark Knight was the first film to utilise the cameras.

With the release of a poster for the film, it has been confirmed that The Odyssey will release on 17 July, 2026.

The movie is still filming now and is reported to even be filming scenes on ‘Goat Island’ in Greece, the actual island where Odyssey scribe Homer imagined Odysseus to have landed.

Describing the film, Universal Pictures called it ‘a mythic action epic shot across the world’.

Emma Thomas, Nolan’s wife and long-time producing partner, said of the film: “I would say it’s very exciting. This is the moment where the possibilities are sort of limitless, we haven’t started thinking practicalities, or anything.

"Oppenheimer was so absurdly successful and we feel like we have an opportunity."

The Odyssey comes out in cinemas on 17 July, 2026.
