First look at new Exorcist movie is giving people nightmares

People are calling it the stuff of 'nightmares'

If you're already over the Barbenheimer mania rife amongst cinephiles right now, then you'll be happy to know there's a brand-new nightmare-inducing flick coming to theatres soon that'll leave you beyond terrified.

Now 50 years after the supernatural smash hit of the original The Exorcist, the franchise has dropped its brand new trailer on Monday (24 July) for the first of its three-part reboot, The Exorcist: Believer.

Be been warned, though, there are a few jump scares and some pretty creep theme music to say the very least.

"When The Exorcist, based on the best-selling book by William Peter Blatty, was released, it changed the culture forever," Universal Pictures explains.

The movie went on to totally obliterate box office records and went on to earn a stonking 10 Academy Award nominations making it the first horror film ever nominated for Best Picture.

So, it's no surprise that director David Gordon Green and screenplay writer Peter Sattler are wanting to bring the vintage horror flick into the 21st century.

The new movie will be the sequel to the infamous 1973 film all about a 12-year-old girl who is possessed by a mysterious demonic entity, forcing her mother to seek the help of two priests to save her.

Universal Pictures announces: "Exactly 50 years ago this fall, the most terrifying horror film in history landed on screens, shocking audiences around the world.

"Now, on Friday, October 13, a new chapter begins."

The first look at the new film is already giving people 'heart attacks' and it's fairly understandable as to why.

In case you're not clued up on the cinematic buzz, The Exorcist: Believer follows the lives of two parents who desperately seek help when their respective daughters show signs of demonic possession.

Sounds decent so far - right?

That's a big yikes from me.

The official synopsis states: "Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom, Jr.) has raised their daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett) on his own.

"But when Angela and her friend Katherine (newcomer Olivia Marcum), disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil."

And things only get more exciting as, for the first time since the 1973 film, Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn will reprise her iconic role as Chris MacNeil - an actor who has been 'forever altered' by what happened to her daughter, Regan, a whole five decades before.

People were proper freaked out by the trailer.

Goosebumps.

People have since taken to social media to share their reactions to the terrifying trailer.

One Twitter user penned: "The theme music itself is horrifying."

"Actually looks scary," admitted a second, while a third echoed: "This actually looks fire."

And a fourth revealed: "I saw the trailer for The Exorcist: Believer. I was terrified, and I could not sleep last night."
