“Now it’s in the movie forever.”

The cast of Wicked: For Good descended on Universal Studios Singapore this week, turning the theme park into a full-blown Emerald City moment.

Fans lined the yellow carpet as Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and director Jon M. Chu arrived for the Asia-Pacific premiere. This was the second-last stop on their massive global press tour. From glittery fan signs to people dressed as full-scale witches, it was clear Singapore is deeply in its Wicked era.

But while the vibes were electric, Jon M. Chu took a moment on the carpet to quietly drop a bombshell that sent Gelphie fans spiralling.

While talking about filming the musical’s emotional duet “For Good” (yes, the one theatre kids have been crying over for 20 years) Chu revealed that something happened between the actors during the scene that was so raw and unexpected he left it in the movie.

“What you see in the movie is unique to that moment in time… after ‘For Good’ there’s this moment where they come together," he told BuzzFeed Australia. "I won’t spoil it yet — we didn’t plan it. It just happened. And now it’s in the movie forever.”

The actors were live-singing every take and Chu said each version came out completely different. That means the moment is 100 percent real, never rehearsed and will never happen again in exactly the same way.

Before Gelphie shippers start building wedding mood boards, Chu has already made it clear that this film is not suddenly a rom-com storyline. He told Deadline that the sequel is about self-discovery and “[Elphaba] figuring out who she is and declaring what she wants in her life”.

Wicked: For Good picks up right where the first film left off, adapting the second half of the Broadway musical and digging into the darker, more political and more heartbreaking turns in Elphaba and Glinda’s story.

The film lands in HOYTS cinemas on November 20, and if Singapore’s reaction is anything to go by… absolutely no one is emotionally prepared.
