In the lead up to Halloween film fans will be looking for the scariest film they can get their hands on and, according to science, there is a quantifiable scariest of them all.
The Science of Scare Project is run annually and breaks down each horror that year and tests how it scientifically scares its viewers.
This project run annually has a ‘Scare Score’ which combines how much a viewer’s heart rate is raised by a film, how much their heart rate varies, and the ‘peak heart rate’.

2026’s results, published by MoneySuperMarket, reveal that the 2026 Resident Evil had the highest peak heart rate ever recorded in the study, hitting an average of 134 BPM from viewers to give it the title of the ‘most scientifically scary moment ever’.
The overall scare score is what lands a film in the rankings released by the Science of Scare Project, and Resident Evil only managed to debut at 56th due to the sections of more comedic action.
Whilst the study does not specify what the exact scariest moment is, if you ask me it surely has to be the absolutely terrifying house jump scare in the midway point of the film, with one fan on Reddit saying of the scene: "I have NEVER screamed so loud in a theatre before… and how a trailer misdirection made that so much better." Another comment on the scene said: "That was absolutely the best jump scare of the movie and while I cannot claim to have seen the most horror movies, that may be the biggest jump I have ever done. I about died."
Undertone was the highest-ranking new addition to the list, a movie in which a podcast host who covers spooky content is sent tapes of disturbing paranormal encounters.
2026’s buzziest horrors Obsession and Backrooms both made the top 50, but only five total hit the top 50.
The scariest film held its place on the top spot however for the fourth year in a row, Sinister, with a scare score of 96/100.

The 2012 Scott Derickson horror stars Ethan Hawke and follows a demonic entity which drives children to go mad and kill their families.
It is a disturbing watch, with a LADbible journalist watching the film to test it out and finding it rose his heart rate by 20 BPM on average, with a huge spike of 131 BPM at one point from a regular average of 55.
Sinister got middling reviews at the time of its released, with a 64% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The legendary critic Roger Ebert gave the film a score of three stars out of four, saying in his review: “Sinister is an undeniably scary movie, with performances adding enough human interest to give depth to the basic building blocks of horror.”
The top ten list is full of some great horrors and, if you’re after a scientifically provable scare this Halloween, are more than worth a marathon.
