Netflix details that the remake is a 'brand new take on the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical'.

"Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical tells the story of an extraordinary girl, with a vivid imagination, who dares to take a stand to change her story with miraculous results," it continues.

The synopsis to the film reads: "Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical is an inspirational musical tale of an extraordinary girl who discovers her superpower and summons the remarkable courage, against all odds, to help others change their stories, whilst also taking charge of her own destiny.

"Standing up for what’s right, she’s met with miraculous results."

Matilda is directed by Matthew Warchus, who directed the musical version.

It is produced by Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan alongside Jon Finn and Luke Kelly of The Roald Dahl Story Company.

The songs and music from the musical adaptation by Tim Minchin are also being used in the film.

The Royal Shakespeare Company production has been adapted for the film by the original scriptwriter Dennis Kelly.

It also features a stellar cast, with Nanny McPhee's Emma Thompson starring as the menacing Miss Trunchbull and No Time to Die's Lashana Lynch as the lovely Miss Honey.

Irish actor Alisha Weir, from Knocklyon in South Dublin, has taken on the role of the magical and powerful six-and-a-half-year-old Matilda.

Weir previously featured in 2018 thriller Don't Leave Home and 2020 family comedy Two by Two: Overboard!.

Much-loved Help star Steven Graham is portraying the sleazy Mr Wormwood.

Graham is joined by Black Mirror's Andrea Riseborough who has taken on the role of Mrs Wormwood.

Matilda is one of several of Dahl's novels which are set to be remade.

In March, 2020, Netflix announced it would also be adapting The Twits and 'many other beloved Dahl stories' into animated series.

It continued: "Very Exciting Thing: Taika Waititi will write and direct Netflix’s first ~two~ Roald Dahl animated series events – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and a wholly original take on the Oompa-Loompas."
