The trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water has just dropped, and we couldn't be more excited. You can watch it here:

The highly anticipated sequel to James Cameron's 2009 epic looks like everything fans could've hoped for, and sees everyone's favourite characters in, you guessed it, a lot of water.

Said to be set 10 years after the events of the first film, the trailer shows Jack Sully (Sam Worthington) learning more about the Na'vi people on Pandora, with his bold partner Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) by his side.

While the watery backdrop might be news to some, fans of the franchise are well aquatinted with the sea-like setting, with the film's official Instagram account sharing a series of snaps showing the main characters exploring the water.

Until now, little was known about the film, other than the fact that it made Saldana cry for a good 20 minutes.

The actor told fans to 'brace themselves' after she was shown footage of the long-awaited film.

Speaking to journalist Kevin McCarthy, Saldana recounted: "I can get choked up just talking about it, because I was able to see just 20 minutes of the second instalment right before the year ended, last year.

"And I was speechless, I was moved to tears."

If the trailer and Saldana being literally moved to tears wasn't enough to hype you up for the film, the actor's next comments will.

"Avatar 2 is definitely a leap from the Avatar 1, so I think you really have to brace yourself for it, but it’s going to be an adventure you will not forget."

And fans are jumping at the bit to watch the film, which has been delayed several times.

Cameron explained these delays in a video call with longtime collaborator Arnold Schwarzenegger: "Covid hit us like it hit everybody... We lost about four and a half months of production."

"We're a hundred percent complete on Avatar 2 and we're sort of ninety-five percent complete on Avatar 3," he confirmed, much to the delight of fans everywhere.

The director then added that he felt 'very lucky' to have chosen New Zealand for the film shoot as it helped them film the sequel under Covid restrictions.

"We made the first film here in New Zealand, and it's ranked either first or second best country in the world for its Covid response – sometimes Germany's in the number one spot, sometimes New Zealand's in the number one spot.

"But we're actually able to operate."

The new film is set to premiere on 16 December 2022 and will be proceeded by another three instalments in the coming years, ending with Avatar 5.
