Is There A Real Purpose To Sony's Rumoured PlayStation 4.5?

Is There A Real Purpose To Sony's Rumoured PlayStation 4.5?

Or just a money spin?

For around a day now there have been rumours of a 'new' PlayStation circulating. Except that it wasn't really a new PlayStation at all, it was a suped up PlayStation 4, that has been dubbed the PlayStation 4.5.

Well according to IGN, both GameSpot and GiantBomb have received documents on the new console.

GameSpot have claimed "There is no doubt - this is real. This is the new, more powerful PlayStation 4." It's also being referred to as the PlayStation 'Neo' which is a bit 2001, but whatever.

Here are the specs of the Neo compared to the normal PS4...

Obviously, it will be a much more powerful console than the PlayStation 4, and that's great, but it's rumoured to cost a weighty $399, and for something that isn't a new console that seems a little steep.

So why would anyone invest in the NEO?

According to Giant Bomb, once the new system launches, all PlayStation games will be required to come in both a "base mode" and an enhanced "NEO mode." That said, there will apparently not be any NEO-exclusive games, so you'd be paying extra wedge to just play a prettier version of the same game in essence.

It's expected that the 4.5/NEO/whatever will launch this autumn and previously released PS4 games will be able to add NEO support through patches.

It's nice that Sony aren't making current PS4 owners feel outdated with the launch of a new/updated console but at the same time are they really offering something that's worth buying into?
