Demi Lovato has announced that she is pansexual, in an interview with US podcast host Joe Rogan.

The 'Heart Attack' singer appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience to discuss everything from her battle with bulimia to her drug overdose, which she explores in depth in her new documentary Dancing With The Devil.

Discussing her romantic life, she told the host that in her early years she had felt 'super closeted off'.

When asked if she would like to have children, she replied: "I used to. I think if anything I want to adopt. I was engaged to a man last year.

"I totally thought I'd be married, maybe pregnant by now. And that's not the case.

"I also don't know if I'm going to end up with a guy, so I can't really see myself maybe getting pregnant.

"I'm so fluid now - and a part of the reason why I am so fluid is because I was super closeted off."

Rogan asked if she meant sexually fluid, to which she agreed. He then asked whether that meant she was pansexual.

"Yeah, I like anything really," she replied.

Demi added she loves being part of the LGBTQIA+ community and dubbed it the 'alphabet mafia'.

There is a difference between being pansexual and bisexual, with the latter being the attraction to two or more genders, whereas pansexuality means not being limited in terms of biological sex, gender or gender identity.

Rogan asked her when she realised she wasn't straight, and the singer recalled watching the scene in Cruel Intentions where Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair's characters kiss.

"I was like, 'Oh, I like that,'" she said.

"But I felt a lot of shame because growing up in Texas as a Christian that's very frowned upon.

"Any attraction I had to a female at a young age, I shut it down before I even let myself process what I was feeling."

In years gone by, Lovato refused to confirm or deny reports about her sexuality, despite allusions in her music.

It wasn't until 2017 when she explained in her YouTube documentary: "I'm very fluid. I think love is love. You can find it in any gender.

"I like the freedom of being able to flirt with whoever I want."
