Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet have announced they are parting ways after being together for 16 years.

In a joint statement, the couple, who had been married for five years, explained how their relationship has reached the end of its course.

"We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times," they wrote. "A revolution is unfolding and our family is of no exception...feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring.

"And so we share our Family news that we are parting ways in marriage.

"We share this not because we think it's newsworthy but so that as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty.

"The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other to be who we are learning to become.

"Our devotion unwavering to this sacred life our children. Teaching our children what's possible. Living the Prayer. May Love Prevail J & L."

Their joint statement on Instagram has comments turned off in case things get nasty, however fans have rallied on Twitter to express their heartache at seeing the couple break up.

Some were also fairly cheeky in their posts.

The Aquaman star and The Cosby Show actress started their relationship back in 2005.

During an appearance on The Conan O'Brien Show, Momoa reflected on how they met.

"I actually had dreaded my hair for her. I had dreadlocks, she had dreadlocks," he recalled.

"I literally turned around and I see her and she goes, 'I'm Lisa.' I turned around to my friend and I [pretended to scream]. I had f-ing fireworks going off inside, man. I convinced her to take me home, because I was living in a hotel."

They eventually had their first date at Cafe 101, according to People, and Jason knew Lisa was the one when she looked at the menu.

"We sat down, she ordered a Guinness, and that was it," he added. "I beyond love Guinness. We had Guinness and grits, and the rest is history."

There were reports swirling in Tinseltown that they got married after dating for two years, but it would take a decade before they actually got hitched in 2017.
