People are flooding to social media to give their well wishes to The Pogues star Shane MacGowan who is currently in hospital.

People are flooding to social media to give their well wishes to The Pogues star Shane MacGowan who is currently in hospital.

The lead singer and songwriter for Celtic band has been in and out of hospital in recent years, confirming in January 2023 that he has a rare and life-threatening brain condition called encephalitis which causes the brain to swell.

However, it is unclear why he is in hospital at this time.

MacGowan's wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, has thanked fans of the 'Fairytale of New York' singer for their ongoing support.

Clarke uploaded an image of herself and MacGowan in his hospital gown in bed to Twitter on Monday, 24 July.

The caption reads: "I just wanted to thank everyone who is sending love and prayers for ⁦@ShaneMacGowan.

"We really appreciate it and bless all of you and anyone anywhere who is having health challenges! ⁦@poguesofficial."

And fans have continued to flood to social media to wish MacGowan a speedy recovery.

A third commented: "Send everything positive that can be sent to you... everything will be fine again! feel hugged."

And a fourth wrote: "So sorry you are struggling with health issues. Sending love, peace, comfort and light as you continue to fight."

Clarke also spoke to the Irish Sunday Mirror about her husband's condition.

While not confirming the exact reason he's currently in hospital, Clarke told the outlet: "He is still in hospital but he is doing well and being looked after. I didn’t want to worry people.

"He is out of the ICU and doing well."

Alongside being diagnosed with encephalitis, MacGowan has previously ended up in hospital as a result of falling over while dancing and breaking his pelvis in 2015.

The accident saw him end up having to use a wheelchair.

He was also admitted to hospital in December 2022 to be treated for an infection.

It's been a tough journey for both Clarke and MacGowan, with Clarke speaking out about the 'turbulence' on Instagram.

Last month, she wrote: "There has been a lot of turbulence in my life recently and it’s been very emotional and also scary but this past few days I have noticed that even though there’s a LOT of fear there is also a huge amount of love.

"[...] Thank you so much to everyone who has been supporting me and @shanemacgowanofficial."
