Netflix has dropped the first image of Evan Peters as serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer for an upcoming TV series.

The true crime show, titled Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, will take a look inside the life of one of America's most dangerous murderers.

Dahmer was convicted of killing 17 boys and young men in 1992, with many of his kills involving cannibalism and necrophilia.

While at large, his horror crime spree saw Dahmer referred to as the Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster by the press.

The sadistic predator also preserved body parts and often kept all or part of the skeletons of his victims.

Netflix's 10-episode limited series has American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy at the helm, so viewers can be assured that the show will be a captivating yet haunting tale.

The series is understood to follow Dahmer's reign of terror from the 1960s through the early 1990s and will be 'largely told from the point of view of Dahmer’s victims', Deadline reports.

The outlet has revealed the show will also do a deep dive into the police officers that bungled the case 'that allowed the Wisconsin native to go on a multiyear killing spree'.

Deadline reports that the show will chronicle at least 10 examples of how authorities nearly caught Dahmer, but either missed the mark or let him go without charge.

In real life, Dahmer carried out his first murder just three weeks after graduation aged 18.

The serial killer was finally caught when he asked three boys to come back to his apartment and pose for nude photos for $100 each. They agreed and Dahmer quickly turned on them once they were inside the property.

One of the boys was handcuffed and told to sit in a room for the photographs. Dahmer at one point rested his head on the boy's chest to listen to his heartbeat, before telling him he planned to eat his heart.

The boy punched Dahmer in the face when he wasn't handcuffed, ran from the apartment and was able to flag down two police officers.

The serial killer was diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder, schizotypal personality disorder and a psychotic disorder, but was found to be legally sane at his trial, where he was sentenced to life in prison.

On November 28, 1994, Dahmer was beaten to death by Christopher Scarver, a fellow inmate at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Wisconsin.
