Jamie Foxx has spoken out about the near-death experience he went through filming a Netflix movie set to release this week.

Foxx was on set during the production of the film when he collapsed and proceeded to ‘black out’ for 20 days.

The actor not only spoke out in a recent Netflix special about what he went through, but also disproved the idea that your life flashes before your eyes.

In April of 2023, Foxx’s family announced that he had been hospitalised after a medical incident that took place while he was filming the new Netflix movie Back in Action.

The movie marks Cameron Diaz’s return to film after almost a decade in retirement, starring alongside Foxx.

He described being sent home by medics after falling ill.

He later found out this was, in actual fact, a stroke – brought on by developing a brain bleed.

One nurse gave the actor a five percent chance of living, with a doctor saying ‘if I don't go in his head right now, we're going to lose him’ when he was brought into hospital.

Foxx said in his Netflix special, titled What Had Happened Was…: “Your life doesn't flash before your face, it was kind of oddly peaceful, I saw a tunnel, I didn't see the light."

He then joked: “It was hot in that tunnel, am I going to the wrong place?

“Shit, am I going to the wrong place in this mother**ker?

“Because I looked at the end of the tunnel, and I thought I saw the devil like, ‘Come on.’ Or is that [Sean Combs]? I’m f**king around.”

Despite a doctor saying he could make a full recovery but it would be the ‘worst year of his life’, Foxx was able to fully recover, and even eventually return to the set of Back in Action.

He went on to say: “If I can stay funny, then I can stay alive”.

The film, only Foxx’s second to release since his stroke, releases this Friday on Netflix.

The signs of a stroke, per the NHS:

  • Face weakness – one side of your face may droop (fall) and it might be hard to smile.
  • Arm weakness – you may not be able to fully lift both arms and keep them there because of weakness or numbness in 1 arm.
  • Speech problems – you may slur your words or sound confused.

The easiest way to remember these symptoms is the word FAST. This stands for: face, arms, speech and time to call 999.

Other symptoms include:

  • Weakness or numbness down 1 side of your body
  • Blurred vision or loss of sight in 1 or both eyes
  • Finding it difficult to speak or think of words
  • Confusion and memory loss
  • Feeling dizzy or falling over
  • A severe headache
  • Feeling or being sick (nausea or vomiting)
