Netflix fans are raving after discovering a hidden gem horror series that 'checks all the boxes' for an 'unsettling' watch.

The TV series, which came out in 2021, features several fan favourite actors and brilliant reviews – and despite that chances are you will have never heard of it.

Despite fans saying they are hooked and the fact it received generally positive reviews, the show was not a massively viewed one for Netflix.

A viral Reddit post however in which a fan was looking for shows that ‘trigger anxiety, paranoia, and emotional disturbance’ has led to fans revisiting it.

The horror series, which stars Rose Salazar, Catherine Keener, and Manny Jacinto, is called Brand New Cherry Flavor.

Responding to the viral Reddit post asking specifically for deeply unsettling films, one fan says: “Brand New Cherry Flavor (a limited series from Netflix not a movie, but definitely checks all the boxes).”

The show’s concept is a bizarre one and undeniably falls under the criteria.

Salazar stars as a filmmaker who moves to Hollywood in the 1990s, looking to connect with a well-known movie producer.

After he’s impressed by her short horror film, she signs a contract with him to produce it as a feature film, working on the agreement that she gets to direct it.

She then rejects his sexual advances, and he drops her from the project. Where the story takes a perhaps unexpected twist, however, is she then takes a deal with a witch to get vengeance against him.

The reviews for the Netflix show back up this idea that it is one of the weirder shows, but beloved by fans.

One 8/10 review on IMDb said: “What I first liked about it is that is is so STRANGE. I think it's the most freakiest show I've watched ever.

“It's so weird and colourful and full of amazing acting. I love a good revenge story, but the addition of witchcraft, and 90's Hollywood? Where do I sign?”

Another said: “It's SO DIFFICULT to find stuff done like this that is not half-measured, watered down or censored to impotency. This series is surreal horror in the vein of Cronenberg, Kafka and Burroughs, and it's done RIGHT.

“The cast is SPECTACULAR, the effects are top notch and the overall design is perfect. Yeah, it's weird, really weird. But it's totally grounded in great dialog, a completely digestible story and a surreal mind bending plot.

“If you're looking for PG screamfest, this isn't it. But this is SO much better than this sort of thing has been for years. And it does not fall off as it goes.”

The series is equally beloved by critics though, with several giving positive reviews.

Karl Quinn of The Age gave Brand New Cherry Flavor a four and a half star review, saying: “An utterly bonkers noirish thriller that is one of the best shows on Netflix right now.”

Brand New Cherry Flavour is available to watch on Netflix.
