Stranger Things fans are hotly anticipating the upcoming finale of the show, but some are already convinced that one of the main characters of the series is ‘already dead’.

Stranger Things season five has been a massive mixed bag for fans, with some praising the new episodes, whilst the penultimate episode of the entire TV show has fallen to become the lowest rated episode of the entire show on IMDb with a 5.5.

The new episodes of the Netflix show have seen a major focus on Will Byers, played by controversial actor Noah Schnapp.

Will was the main focus of season one, with it all centring around the search to find him in the Upside Down, however, season five has seen him take far more of a leading role than in the past.

Despite this though, fans are convinced that he is a goner in the finale episode.

Will’s new role in the show plays a major role in why fans think he’s certain to die in the upcoming finale episode.

In the last episode of season five volume one, The Sorcerer, it is revealed that Will’s time in the Upside Down have given him the powers to control the Demogorgons just like Vecna, even going on to control Vecna himself in one of the most beloved scenes of volume two.

In the latest episode, however, the show explains the entire Upside Down, showing that it is not another dimension but a wormhole to the generation where the Mindflayer and other creatures are from, The Abyss.

During the explanation of the show’s lore, there is one scene in which the wormhole on a whiteboard perfectly centres Will as he lingers staring at it, something fans are convinced is a hint at what is to come.

One fan tweeted, alluding to Eleven’s plans to stay behind in The Abyss, saying: “I hope you all know that [Will] lied about not being afraid anymore and El is not the only one who is planning to die along with Upside Down.”

Another quoted this saying that he ‘knows he’s the bridge’, pointing to a popular fan theory that the Upside Down is linked to Will and that he is part of the bridge to the Abyss.

They went on to say ‘he knows he won’t make it through the night’.

One fan theory went even further, however, suggesting that he is already dying.

In volume two Nancy, Johnathon, Steve, and Dustin almost die after they come across ‘exotic matter’, with Nancy shooting it and causing the world around them to start to fall apart.

Whilst they survive and it doesn’t appear to have destroyed things just yet, some fans think that Nancy actually killed her younger brother’s friend.

They tweeted; “Will is the one who stabilises the bridge, Upside Down Nancy shot the exotic matter, like a bullet in the heart, the bridge started falling apart Without the heart Will falls apart Will is already dying.”

Another responded saying: “This! The group was so busy talking about Eleven in their plan and risking her life all the time that they didn't notice Will potentially sacrificing himself to seal the Upside Down in the final battle because he wants to shoulder the responsibility of saving the world with her.”

With the finale set to last two hours and eight minutes and the creators The Duffer Brothers have hinted that it will be ‘massive’, with Matt Duffer saying: “I mean, it’s massive. I will say… the thing I’m most excited about… for people to watch the finale is in terms of the scale, it’s the biggest thing we’ve ever had.”

He added that it ‘has the most character moments and the most emotion of any of the episodes, at least this season’.

The Stranger Things finale will release New Years Eve at 8pm ET.
