Adolescence fans told where show is actually set after part of plot left Netflix viewers confused

The director of Adolescence has talked about where the show is actually set after some viewers were a bit confused by the various accents of the characters.

Stephen Graham's scouse accent rather comes part and parcel with the man and his significant acting talent, while plenty of other actors in Adolescence all sound like they come from different parts of the UK as well.

According to Time Out, Adolescence director Philip Barantini said that the casting of Owen Cooper helped guide them to decide where the show was actually set.

The Netflix series was largely filmed in the West Yorkshire town of South Kirkby, which is home to the Production Park studios, and since Cooper is from Warrington the director knew what part of England the drama was generally going to be set in.

He said: "We knew it was going to be set somewhere in the north of England.

"We also knew it would be from somewhere around wherever our Jamie was from, because it would have been unfair to make him do an accent."

Even if the accents from the actors are from different places the show carries a general northern vibe.

According to the BBC the sets for the police station in the first episode and the youth detention centre in episode three of Adolescence were built in Production Park, with it taking about six weeks to put it all together.

Just a five minute drive away from the studios is Minsthorpe Community College, where the school scenes in the second episode were filmed.

Meanwhile a nearby house owned by residents Dylan Naylor and Bethany Fletcher was used for the Miller household where the Netflix series begins with a dramatic police raid and ends in the heartbreaking scene of Eddie Miller (Graham) breaking down in tears in his son's bedroom.

It turns out that the filming locations needed to be within 10 minutes drive of Production Park to make the one-shot technique work.

When characters are being driven around that's an actual car they're in, though the vehicle is rigged up with cameras and someone driving it from a frame mounted on top so the actors can focus on their performances.

It's an incredible achievement to put it all together and so many people have praised Adolescence for the way it has tackled misogyny and the manosphere.

The disturbing drama focuses on the story of a family forced to reckon with their son Jamie (Cooper) being arrested when police say he has murdered a girl.

Many viewers have been shaken to their core by what they've seen, but reckon that Adolescence has done an incredible job in the process.
