People say Jim Carrey's Grinch became way more relatable when they reached adulthood

While the character might appear to be the villain in the film, loads of people say he's exactly like them.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas was released more than two decades ago and it seems kids who grew up with the festive film are starting to realise that, well, they've turned into him.

The 2000 Christmas film starring Jim Carrey is a retelling of the Dr Seuss classic, which follows a mean, green, holiday season hating machine called The Grinch.

Essentially, he lives alone with his dog and gets really annoyed at Christmas when his neighbours, the Whos, keep making the holiday period bigger, brighter, and louder.

Sound like anyone you know?

Look, sometimes we all just need a bit of peace and quiet. The holiday season can be overwhelming, so we get it.

In the hit film Carrey, wearing a shocking amount of prosthetics and green fur, goes on to plot against the Whos to thwart their Christmas celebrations.

We've all metaphorically shaken our fists in the air at a noisy neighbour at one time or another... right? Totally relatable.

Social media seems to agree, with Twitter lighting up like a Christmas tree with people who have realised that they've grown up to be Grinch-levels of crabby.

One social media user said: "Growing up I just loved watching the film but now being an adult I fully understand how much I relate to the Grinch."

A second said: "Child brain: 'The Grinch is awful, he ruins Christmas!' Adult brain: 'I relate very strongly to the Grinch.'"

A third piped up with: "When you were scared of the Grinch as a kid but relate to him on a personal level as an adult."

I mean, let's admit it: we're all a bit of a Grinch, and not just at Christmas.

The Grinch has some classic quotes, such as: "Am I just eating because I'm bored?"

Yep, been there.

And the classic tantrum this writer has thrown at least half a dozen times: "If I can't find something nice to wear, I'm not going."

And - especially after Covid-19 lockdowns that only encouraged our inner anti-social grump - we've all tried to justify dodging plans with friends.

The Grinch said: "6:30pm. Dinner with me? Can't cancel that again. 7:00pm, Wrestle with my self-loathing. I'm [fully] booked!"

Yeah, we can totally relate to that one, if we're being honest.

So it seems we've all turned a shade or two of green. But this Christmas, try not to be too much of a Grinch.

At least, don't let it spoil Christmas.
