The reviews are in for Prey – the highly anticipated Predator prequel – and it's already breaking records.

The suspense-filled film debuted on Friday, 5 August. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, Prey follows Naru (Amber Midthunder), a skilled female warrior who fights to protect her tribe while under attack from a 'highly-evolved' predator - aka the villain from John McTiernan's hit 1987 film, Predator.

While many thought it'd be hard to top the 80s suspense-filled classic, it seems that Prey isn't pulling any punches either, having debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with an impressive 100 percent rating.

The score has since dropped to 93 percent, but that's still an incredibly impressive feat and makes the film the highest-rated instalment of the entire franchise, with the critics' consensus being overwhelmingly positive.

One reviewer wrote: "How can one teenage girl hope to take down this enormous, often invisible, ferocious, emotionally intelligent, extraterrestrial being with a wide array of weapons at its disposal? Let's just say Prey comes up with ingenious ways to even the odds."

While another wrote: You may think you don't need another Predator movie in your life, but you need this one -- it is awesome."

A third added that 'the action is propulsive, blood-soaked but inventive'.

The main character, Naru, is getting a lot of love.

Fan reactions on Twitter were similarly positive, with one user saying: "Hype was legit. PREY is easily, by the widest margin possible, the best PREDATOR movie since the original, the Predator himself looks cooler than ever (I said what I said), the room I'm in exploded multiple times, Midthunder is a goddamn star, the kills were insane, I screamed wh."

And there was overwhelming support for the lead actor, Amber Midthunder, who pulled an absolute blinder of a performance, with saying: "Y'all this movie right here is truly a masterpiece, one of the best predator movie I have seen. Prey got suspense, tension and a thrill of hunt or get hunted lol 10/10 oh and I forgot to mention... NARU IS F**KIN BADASS."
