The US premiere date for Rick and Morty season six has been confirmed.

The show will premiere on Adult Swim on 4 September at 11pm ET/PT, with new episodes likely releasing weekly as with previous seasons.

UK viewers may have to wait a little longer for the mad scientist and his grandson to be back on their screens, with E4 yet to confirm a UK premiere date.

Last we left off at the end of season five, Evil Morty had managed to escape through the central finite curve into the infinite universes where Rick wasn't the smartest being in existence.

On the way out he destroyed the Citadel of Ricks, killing off huge amounts of alternate Ricks and Mortys in the process.

This had huge consequences, as part of Evil Morty's plan involved slaughtering a whole slew of backup Ricks and Mortys, meaning death for our heroes is a much scarier prospect.

While Rick could previously get killed off as a joke and come back as a teddy bear or a shrimp (both in fascist realities to boot), now he might have to be much more careful.

Then there's dangling plot threads like Birdperson's search for his daughter and the way his friendship with Rick seems to be on the rocks given their awkward parting.

On top of that is Morty's straining relationship with his grandfather after he chose to stay with Rick at the end of season five rather than travel with Evil Morty.

Rick himself thought Morty leaving was the right decision, having left Morty in the previous episode to go and do 'the crows thing' for a while.

It seems as though Rick is increasingly of the opinion that he's a bad influence on his family, especially Morty.

To make matters even worse, Rick might be without his iconic portal gun after it appeared to run out of fluid in the season five finale, while Evil Morty might have used all the remaining portal fluid to get through the central finite curve.

Rick and Morty will be back for more adventures, whether they've still got working portal technology is another question.

What that means for season six is as yet a mystery, but it could indicate fewer episodes with our heroes getting around via portals to different parts of the universe.

On a slightly more positive note, Beth and Jerry's marriage seems to be doing better than it used to as they're finding ways to put the spark back into their marriage, including a threesome with Rick's nemesis Mr Nimbus, who controls the police.

Arriving on 4 September, it'll make it just a day short of a year since season five of Rick and Morty wrapped up with that climactic finale.

With little over a month for US audiences to wait before the new season of Rick and Morty premieres it's time to get excited about what we'll see in the new episodes.
