The 41 year old was born and raised in the inner-Sydney suburb of Balmain, and first entered the local limelight in 1999.

She starred alongside a young Heath Ledger in the Australian comedy Two Hands.

She later made her big move to Hollywood with a part in the 2002 Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (Episode II).

However, Byrne’s first breakthrough role was arguably as attorney Elle Parsons thriller series Damages.

The programme saw her earn her two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama series in 2009 and 2010, and two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress in 2008 and 2010.

The next year, Byrne not only saw greater success, but demonstrated her ability to act across a wide variety of genres, starring in three box office hits: Bridesmaids, X-Men: First Class and Insidious.

Since then, Byrne has gone on to star in a multitude of successful productions and has excelled in more comedy roles than serious ones.

In an interview with the Sydney morning Herald, she revealed: “I was incredibly serious about acting.

"It was less about being famous and more about being a serious actress. Then I realised I think I might be better at being funny.”

Being funny has certainly worked in Byrnes favour, and she continues to thrive not only on screen, but in creating a beautiful family too.

She has two children, Rocco and Rafa, with her partner and fellow actor Bobby Cannavale.

They purchased their family home in 2015 - a $2.2 million townhouse in Brooklyn.
