Tom Holland revealed moment that made him realise he had an issue with alcohol

Tom Holland has opened up about the moment that made him want to give up drinking for good.

While the Spider-Man star, 28, hasn't had much of a private life since becoming a Hollywood superstar, he also hasn't shied away from talking about his personal problems.

Being in the limelight for so long can be tough and Holland said that he has previously struggled with his mental health.

"I’m no stranger to the physical aspects of the job, doing the whole action-movie thing," he told Entertainment Weekly in 2023.

"But the mental aspect, it really beat me up, and it took a long time for me to recover afterward, to sort of get back to reality."

The actor previously deleted social media a couple years back, saying that it was 'overstimulating' and 'overwhelming'.

"So I decided to take a step back and delete the app," Holland said in a video posted online.

But when it comes to alcohol, Holland spoke about his sobriety journey on Jay Shetty's podcast last year.

The film star admitted that partaking in 'dry January' mad him realise he was addicted to alcohol.

"I didn't one day wake up and say 'I'm giving up drinking'. I just, like many Brits, had had a very, very boozy December, Christmas time, I was on vacation, I was drinking a lot," he said last year.

Holland went on to reveal that he has always enjoyed drinking, stating that he thinks he gets it from his mother's side of the family.

He continued: "I decided to just give up for January, I wanted to do just dry January, and all I think about was taking a drink.

"It was all I could think about. I was waking up thinking about it, I was checking the clock, 'When's it 12?' And it just really scared me.

"I was like, 'Wow, maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing,' so I sort of decided to just punish myself and say I'll do February as well, I'll do two months off."

At that stage, Holland concluded that if he could do two months without a drink, then it would prove he doesn't have a 'problem'.

But two months had passed without alcohol and Holland was really struggling.

"I couldn't be social, I felt like I couldn't go to the pub and have a lime soda, I couldn't go out for dinner, I was really, really struggling and I started to really worry that I had an alcohol problem," he said.

Three months then passed without alcohol, and before you know it, Holland reached the six month mark on his 26th birthday on 1 June, 2022.

After all this time going without alcohol, Holland says he is now sleeping better, and is generally in a better mindset.

He added: "I felt healthier, I felt fitter and I just sort of said to myself, 'Why am I enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed by the idea of having this drink?'"
