Movie lovers are saying Top Gun: Maverick is the best film of the year so far, with one even branding it the ‘best of all the legacy sequels’. You can check out its trailer here:

The eagerly-anticipated sequel landed in cinemas last month and it's fair to say it’s been a huge hit.

Top Gun: Maverick is set 36 years after the original Top Gun flick and centres on Captain Pete 'Maverick’ Mitchell (played by original cast member Tom Cruise) returning to United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program - also known as Top Gun - where he is forced to confront his past as he trains up a group of new pilots, including the son of his late best friend Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw.

Alongside Cruise, the movie stars Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris and Jon Hamm. It also stars Miles Teller as Lt. Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s deceased pal Goose.

The movie has proved to be a big hit with cinemagoers and is the biggest box office opening of Cruise’s career to date.

Paramount Pictures

ComicBook reports the sequel to the 1986 movie has enjoyed an opening weekend of $124 million (£98m) in the US and a take of $248 million (£196m) at the worldwide box office.

Meanwhile, fans have been flocking to social media to praise the movie, with one writing: “Top Gun: Maverick, easily this years best movie so far.”

Another said: “Top Gun: Maverick is by far the best movie of the year. This is how you do a sequel. Watch it in IMAX or the biggest screen possible and I promise you won’t regret it.”

Someone else posted: "I think Top Gun: Maverick might be my favourite movie of this year. So satisfying and heartwarming. It genuinely has one of the best final acts I’ve seen.”

While a fourth fan commented: “Top Gun: Maverick is easily the best of all the legacy sequels. I give it a solid 9/10! Just go see it! What a fantastic film."

High praise indeed.

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, Top Gun: Maverick boasts a near-perfect 99 percent audience rating, while on IMDB it has a non-too-shabby 8.7 out of ten - surpassing the original Top Gun that has a score of 57 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.9 on IMDB.

If you fancy seeing what all the fuss is about, Top Gun: Maverick is in cinemas now.
