Trevor Noah has announced that he is stepping down from The Daily Show but told viewers that he is “filled with gratitude for the journey.”

The 38-year-old has hosted the talk show since 2015, and has not yet made clear exactly when his departure will be, but will continue to present the show in the meantime.

Noah started his career in his native South Africa, where he released stand-up comedy specials and hosted a similar but less popular late-night talk show.

He moved to the US in 2011 and was offered the central role on The Daily Show a few years later, taking over from Jon Stewart. 

On thursday’s episode he thanked the crew and all members of the team for the most amazing seven years hosting the show, and told viewers that he is leaving to carry on exploring other avenues in his life.

Noah is looking into pursuing more stand-up comedy roles and felt it was the right time to leave the show.

The presenter lives in a Manhattan two-level penthouse that he paid just short of $10 million for.
