48 Million Members Have Watched Ratched Since It Was Released 28 Days Ago

Ratched is officially Netflix's biggest new original series of 2020, with 48 million member views in its first 28 days.

The show, which features Sarah Paulson as lead character Nurse Ratched seems to have gone down a treat with viewers.

The streaming service tweeted out the impressive news, saying: "In its first 28 days, 48 million members have booked an appointment with Nurse Ratched, making it our biggest original Season 1 of the year."

And the show has done so well that it's already been given a second season, much to the joy of fans.

The show tells the origin story of Nurse Mildred Ratched, a character created in Ken Kesey's 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and later immortalised by a terrifying Louise Fletcher in the 1975 movie of the same name, which also starred Jack Nicholson.

Loads of people quickly binged through all the episodes after the programme debuted and are begging for more.

But fear not, there will be a second season.

Netflix has already commissioned another instalment, which means we can get very excited about what will happen next. The only problem is we could be waiting a while before we get to feast our eyes and ears on the new material.

Speaking at an online press conference, Sarah explained that due to the pandemic, and producer Ryan Murphy having a number of different projects on the go, it's not yet known whether Season 2 has even been written.

"Nobody knows anything about season two because Ryan, with the number of things he has going on, who's to know when when that's all going to begin, and you throw in the pandemic and then we think well who knows," she explained.

The first series has eight episodes, and is set in 1947 - which is a good sign for the future, given that the film was set in the 1950s.

Paulson's character, at the point that the prequel is set, has yet to completely become the cold and calculated figure of the film, and the American Horror Story actor argues that her character is not a complete villain...yet.

The show's official synopsis reads: "From Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, Ratched is a suspenseful drama series that tells the origin story of asylum nurse Mildred Ratched.

"In 1947, Mildred arrives in Northern California to seek employment at a leading psychiatric hospital where new and unsettling experiments have begun on the human mind.

"On a clandestine mission, Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, but the wheels are always turning and as she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it, Mildred's stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smouldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born."

The entire first season is available to watch on Netflix.
