Ghostbusters co-creator Dan Aykroyd has confirmed he'll return alongside Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts in the forthcoming Ghostbusters sequel.

Speaking on The Greg Hill Show, Aykroyd discussed the new film - currently titled Ghostbusters2020 - and explained that not only would he and several of his former co-stars be returning, but that they'd also already shot their parts.

He said: "Jason Reitman wrote a beautiful, heartfelt script that takes the real DNA from the first two movies and transfers that directly to the third, the next generation.

"It hands the legacy off to a new generation of stars, and players, and actors, and characters.

"And we've shot our part - [Bill] Murray, Sigourney [Weaver] and Annie Potts - and it was really exciting working on this new idea, this new take on this story."

Giving it the hard sell it arguably doesn't even need, Aykroyd continued: "I have really good feelings about his, just because of the quality of the stars we've got there.

"We've got some really terrific young actors, a great story, a great setting.

"It's gonna be scary, really thought-provoking, it's gonna be very heart-felt."

Along with Aykroyd, Murray, Weaver and Potts, Ernie Hudson also confirmed his role in the movie earlier this year, while young stars who'll be taking the baton from the veteran actors include Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Logan Kim.

It doesn't look like another of the original crew, Rick Moranis, will be showing his face, as he retired from acting in the late 1990s - having only really done a few bits of voice work since.

Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd are also on board, meaning it really is an ensemble cast of BIG names.

Director Jason Reitman shared first story details during Ghostbusters Fan Fest back in June - though unsurprisingly he wasn't giving much away about the film, which will be set in the same continuity as the 1984 and 1989 flicks.

"I'm not gonna give anything away today, but I will say it's a new movie. This is a new movie about a new set of characters, it takes place in a new place, a new location," he said.

"And I'm hoping that [the fans] join me on this one, because these characters are amazing. Amazing, and I can't wait to introduce you to them."
