After two decades of speculation, Justin Timberlake has finally cleared up whether his song was really about ex flame Britney Spears.
His hit 2006 track What Goes Around… Comes Around had long been at the centre of rumours that it was about the Stronger singer and was effectively a follow-up to Cry Me a River.
Fans had long thought the lyrics about betrayal, heartbreak and revenge had reflected their 2002 breakup.
The music pair had been together for around three years, first developing a romance after meeting as children on The Mickey Mouse Club House and later reconnecting as pop stars.

But they split in 2002, the same time Cry Me a River was released. In Britney's 2023 memoir, she touched on how she was devastated when the relationship ended and how the public narrative surrounding their breakup affected her.
“I was comatose in Louisiana, and he was happily running around Hollywood,” she penned.
However 20 years after the track was released, Timberlake has confirmed for the first time it was not written about ex-girlfriend Spears.
Speaking on Complex's Re-Rank series, Justin clarified that the song wasn't based on his own relationship.
Instead, he explained that it was actually inspired by another friend's breakup and that he actually asked permission to use his experience in the lyrics.
His friend reportedly told him: "Torch that b---. What goes around comes around."
He told the YouTube series he wrote the track in around 20 minutes, adding: “Maybe I should dispel a rumor at this point, which has gone around forever, which is like, it’s not a personal story from mine.
“It’s actually a personal story from a friend’s that I asked permission [to use].

“He was just going through it and he was telling me what had happened, and I said, ‘Do you mind if I write about this?’ And I quote, my friend said, ‘Yeah, torch that b---. What goes around comes around.’
"And I was like, ‘I have to go. Thank you,'".
However Cry Me a River is still widely thought to be about his relationship with the Hit Me Baby One More Time singer. In the music video, he sings alongside a Spears look-alike, who is portrayed to have been cheating on him.
