As Marvel fans eagerly await the release of Guardians of the Galaxy 3, writer/director James Gunn has teased his idea for a Drax and Mantis standalone flick.

Although there are no solid plans in place, the director has said the spin-off 'hasn't been ruled out'.

Considering the Guardians films are widely regarded as some of the higher ranking movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) thanks to their cosmic creativity and balanced humour, we have a feeling this would do well with the fanbase.

The idea for the film came to light when Dave Bautista - who plays former intergalactic criminal and Guardians member Drax - was asked whether he'd reprise his role for a Disney+ series.

Although he's not up for a Drax-based TV show - understandably, the make-up 'would be really rough' - he is interested in a team-up movie alongside the empathic cosmic crew member Mantis (Pom Klementieff).

''What I would like to do is honestly, and this is not my idea, I'm stealing this idea, but James Gunn had the idea to do a Drax/Mantis movie," he told Collider.

''And that's what I would be up for, because there's just too much fun there.''

Gunn certainly sounds keen - he even shared the article on Twitter, writing: "True. But this was never ruled out. I still think it could be amazing."

His optimism certainly has the fans excited, with one commenting on the post: "OMG I would watch that."

Another wrote: "While I got my checkbook out just tell me what number to write and how to switch to a more current method of transferring funds."

Others had additional ideas for potential Guardians of the Galaxy spin-offs, with one person suggesting: "Wait what if you did a Mantis and Nebula movie? Like Nebula teaches Mantis self defence whilst lost somewhere and waiting for rescue or something. Them 2 would work together so well I think."

And it goes without saying that the loveable Rocket Raccoon got a mention too, with a number of fans calling for him to get his own Disney+ series.

So, what have we learned? Gunn has an idea for a Drax and Mantis team-up movie and one of the main stars is totally down to make it happen, as are the fans.

But even if the idea comes to fruition, it could be a while before we get to see it on the big screen.

When speaking with Collider, Bautista added: "He (Gunn) wanted to do it, he had an idea for it, it's just that Marvel has their slot for the next five years, they know how it's going to go and it's hard for them just to have an idea for a film and say, 'Yeah we want to fit that in here.'

While we eagerly wait to see whether the project gets the green light, at least there's a Guardians threequel to look forward to.Featured Image Credit: Marvel
