Netflix has confirmed that Idris Elba is returning as DCI John Luther in a brand new feature film, starring alongside the likes of Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis.

Announcing the news on Facebook, the streaming site said: "Luther is coming back! Idris Elba will reprise his iconic role - joined by Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis - in a new feature film written by series creator Neil Cross."

It seems many fans of the show are already excited for the new project, with one commenting on social media: "Love Luther especially now Andy Serkis in it top actors the 2 of them."

Someone else said: "Oh my goddddddddddddd."

Tagging some friends, another wrote: "Is this best news you've had all day?"

A fourth added: "Best news ever!! Wonder if Alice will be back!"

There have been five series of the BBC crime drama, the first of which aired back in 2010.

The film has been in the works for some time, with Elba - who plays the titular character - saying back in 2018 that creator Neil Cross had been trying to get the feature-length project off the ground.

After the last series was released in 2019, the star said he felt things had been set up perfectly for a movie.

Speaking to LADbible at the time, he said: "When you scale a movie up, you have to give it size - that means taking it into other territories, internationally, but I still think it will feel like the 'Gotham City' in London. But obviously, on a bigger international scale, it could take us anywhere.

"I'm really up for the movie now. I'm really up for it. And I think this season is set up to tee that up."

He continued: "We've made varied seasons, one season was six episodes, one was four - Luther's adaptable.

"I think if we can figure out the formula to keep an audience captivated for an hour and a half, on a movie, I think Luther has definitely got the attributes to make that happen."

Earlier this year, Elba also confirmed that the film would go into production in September, saying he was 'so excited' to get to work on the movie.

"We go into production, fingers crossed, in September," he told Variety.

"I'm so excited about it, it's been a long time coming.

"We're very, very close to pulling the green light on production."
