The Witcher star Henry Cavill has been heaped with praise by fans of the new Netflix's series, but when it came to winning over the costume department it may have been a bit of a different story as the actor bulked up so much for the role his costume had to be regularly replaced.

Netflix

Costume designer Tim Aslam told Polygon that during filming Cavill's 'muscles wore down the leather at such an alarming rate' that replacements were near constantly being produced to make sure he was camera-ready. Nice problem to have.

Meanwhile, Cavill revealed that hair and costume is a huge part of helping him step into character, telling the news outlet: "Hair and makeup stuff has become an essential component of becoming the character in the morning.

"One, because it takes so damn long, and two, it's such a particular look. I wanted to make sure Geralt looked like a witcher who was a badass and still remained raw." Well, I think you managed that, pal.

Cavill, who wore a weathered suit of armour and a long silver wig during filming, took the costume so seriously that he even 'made breakfast' and was kipped in it. Now that's dedication for you.

The Witcher producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich told Polygon: "He wanted, for instance, for the armour to look like it had been worn for years and years. So, he made breakfast in it and he would sleep in it.

"We were like 'you don't have to do that by the way', but he's that invested in embodying his character.

"It was important to him. It's one of the reasons why Henry is such an important member of our team."

And it seems as though all that time in his costume meant that Cavill grew very attached, so much so, that when filming came to an end, he took it home with him.

Cavill told the NME: "I took it all home, yeah. It's not so easy to put on. And it took two hours of hair and make-up every day, so that's just sitting at home looking cool."

The Witcher is streaming on Netflix right now.
