Shazam! turned out to be both a critical and box office success for the DC Universe so it's no surprise that a sequel has been given the green light.

During a panel at the 2019 Comic Con Experience in Brazil, Warner Bros announced the news that Shazam! 2 is happening, much to the delight of the cheering crowds.

The studio also confirmed that Zachary Levi will return to reprise his role as the titular superhero.

Of course, fans already knew that a sequel was on the cards after reports stated earlier this year that Henry Gayden had signed up to pen the script and director David F. Sandberg was likely to return for the second outing.

However, now we have official confirmation, with Levi also revealing that production could start as early as summer 2020.

The first film followed Billy Batson (played by Asher Angel), who is chosen by the ancient wizard Shazam as his new champion and receives is provided with various superpowers.

By shouting one word - 'shazam', obviously - the 14-year-old can transform into the grown-up superhero, played by Levi.

Billy and his best pal Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) are tasked with mastering Billy's new superpowers in order to save the world from the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.

While it didn't have us much acclaim as some of the bigger DC titles such as Aquaman or Wonder Woman, it brought some much-needed, lighthearted fun to the franchise - DC's equivalent of Marvel's Ant-Man, if you will.

It's for this reason the film performed well, giving enough reason for Warner Bros to grant the story another outing.

Of course, this wasn't the only treat dolled out at the CCXP. As well as Shazam! 2, those who were lucky enough to be in the crowd got to experience the world premiere of the trailer for Wonder Woman 1984.

The sequel to the acclaimed Wonder Woman follows Gal Gadot's superhero into new territory, as she comes into conflict with the Soviet Union during the Cold War and battles a new enemy called The Cheetah.

The villainess will be played by Kristen Wiig, while Chris Pine is back as Diana Prince's love Steve Trevor.

Gadot seemed pretty excited about the trailer being released after pouring her blood, sweat and tears into the project.

She wrote on Twitter: "Last night's rehearsal, watching the full trailer I realised - It's happening!!!"

Although there's no release date for Shazam! 2, at least we know Wonder Woman 1884 is out on 5 June 2020.
