A hidden gem TV show with a 90 percent Rotten Tomatoes’ score has been branded the ‘most underrated’ of all time.

Banshee centres on an ex-con - played by The Boys’ actor Antony Starr - who upon release from prison assumes the identity of the slain sheriff who was heading to Banshee in Pennsylvania Amish country to work.

Living under the stolen identity of Lucas Wood, the ex-con attempts to hide from dangerous crime boss ‘Rabbit’ (played by Ben Cross), while also meting out his own brand of justice.

The show ran for four seasons, from 2013 to 2016, and holds a very respectable 8.4 on IMDb, while on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes it fares even better with a 90 percent score and slightly higher audience score of 91 percent.

The show was branded ‘one of the best TV shows you’ve never seen’ by The Independent’s Sarah Hughes.

“This is pulp television at its best, a fast, furious blast of over-the-top plot lines, scenery-chewing villains and tightly shot action scenes,” she added.

Kiwi actor Antony Starr plays an ex-con who assumes the identity of a sheriff.

“Written by acclaimed literary novelists Jonathan Tropper and David Schickler, Banshee comes across like the result of an all-night speed-writing jag yet its gleeful indulgence in pulp’s conventions - a man with no name, a bad girl trying hard to be good, a sharp-suited villain whose slick words disguise his true evil - is what makes it such fun.”

While on social media, fans were also quick to heap praise on the show, with one person writing on Twitter (now known as X): “I’m rewatching Banshee and Antony Starr is so bad a**. Definitely one of the most underrated shows.”

Another said: “Anyone who liked Antony Starr as Homelander gotta watch Banshee. Such an awesome and underrated show.”

A third posted: “Finished watching Banshee today, really fun show with unique characters and some really great action. Surprised I haven't really heard about this show before outside of ‘something Antony Starr was in before playing Homelander’. Small town crime drama meets John Wick, basically.”

Someone else wrote: “I'm currently watching Banshee with Antony Starr from The Boys, and I've literally never heard anyone talk about it before. It’s one of the best and well choreographed action TV shows I've ever watched.”

If you fancy checking it out for yourself, viewers in the UK can watch all four season of Banshee on Now TV.
