David Tennant fans can’t get over his reaction to finding out he got special recognition award

The Doctor Who actor was in complete shock when he realised he'd won

Fans are reliving the heartwarming moment David Tennant received a Special Recognition Award at the National Television Awards and they just can't get over his adorable reaction.

Watch the moment he realised he'd won below:

The Doctor Who actor and all-round legend was honoured with a Special Recognition Award at the National Television Awards back in 2015.

The prestigious award is awarded to people or programmes that have made a significant contribution to British television over a number of years.

Other winners include Sir David Attenborough, Stephen Fry and Paul O'Grady.

It is the only award at the NTAs that is not voted for by the general public.

Now, most recipients usually know when they're about to be honoured with the special award.

David, on the other hand, didn't seem to have a clue.

As his name was called and the tribute video began, the 52-year-old looked genuinely shocked and moved, looking around the room in bewilderment.

Tennant seemed to have no idea he was going to be honoured with the award.

The video included praise and kind words from the likes of Billie Piper, Stephen Fry, Olivia Colman, Catherine Tate and his father.

Just a year later, his dad tragically passed away from lung disease.

David's Doctor Who co-star, Billie Piper called him 'a special actor, and a decent human being.'

Meanwhile, Stephen Fry said: “I think of David you always want to know more. You kind of look and you just want to look further.”

And Olivia Colman, who starred alongside him in Broadchurch, called him 'a joy' and added that he has a complete lack of an ego.

One of his most beloved parts is the iconic Doctor, a role he is set to return to for the show's 60th anniversary next month.

When it came time for David to take to the stage to accept the award, the actor struggled to find the words to express his gratitude.

“I am so glad I didn’t get stuck in traffic," he joked. "This is a very out-of-body experience. So much of tonight now makes sense! All those people lying to me.”

After the video of his win was recently reposted to TikTok, fans of the actor flocked to the comments to share their love for him.

"I love how genuinely surprised he is, like he doesn't know that his is one of the most beloved people alive," one person wrote.

Another commented: "He looks so genuinely baffled that people have nice things to say about him."

And a third said: "Some actors are just special. David Tennant is definitely one of them."

Next month, David Tennant will return to his iconic role as the Doctor in three special episodes for the show's 60th anniversary.

And we can look forward to seeing Ncuti Gatwa as the 15th Doctor in episodes due to air over the Christmas period.
