If you’re hoping for some Dewey social media content ahead of the Malcolm in the Middle revival, we’ve got some bad news for you.
As the iconic sitcom is returning for a four-part revival at Disney+, many fans have been holding out hope that Dewey star Erik Per Sullivan would make a return to the small screen despite keeping himself out of the spotlight since the show closed its doors.
A recent alleged exchange on Instagram only heightened this, after an account attributed to the actor commented on Reese star Justin Berfield's post announcing the reboot.
However, some loyal fans of the show became suspicious as the account only seemed to feature pictures of Sullivan in character as Dewey, and not a lot of updates concerning the years since the show wrapped in 2006.
Something was clearly off with Sullivan’s supposed Instagram, which led some Malcolm in the Middle lovers to do some digging, posting their findings to Reddit.
As it turns out, no other actor in the Malcolm cast follows Sullivan’s IG back.
"i don’t think so,” one person responded to questions about the veridicality of the account. "no one in the cast follows him and all the accounts posts are a lil off lol”.
"100% is NOT him. That picture is hella old. Just a fan account,” another stated.
A third Redditor wrote: "I understand Erik Per Sullivan stepped away from the spotlight completely. He’s done a pretty good job as there’s literally nothing known on his current whereabouts."
Despite doubts on its authenticity, Sullivan’s page racked up 93.6K followers and counting, and is bombarded by comments from fans calling for a Dewey return on the revival series.
While Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek are set to reprise their roles, it hasn’t been confirmed that Sullivan will star in the sequel — but it doesn’t seem likely, given his decision to maintain a low profile.
Some fans, however, are holding out hope for even just a brief glimpse of Malcolm’s younger brother.
"I know that 99.9999% chance is that there will be 0 Dewey in the show reboot because of Erik Per Sullivan wanting privacy… but part of me wishes that in the last 30 seconds of the show, Dewey would walk in, drop a suitcase by his feet, and ask some variation of “what’s up?” Or something, then they end the show there,” one person offered.
"I’m sure they’ll reference Dewey in some form anyway,” was another comment.
"I hope they at least get his voice on the show,” someone else wrote. "Like Malcolm calls Dewey to invite him for the party and Dewey goes - 'I'm not interested in this anymore, Good Bye'."
The last one seems the more appropriate, if we’re honest.
