The case of Mackenzie Shirilla has received a great deal of extra interest due to Netflix’s The Crash, the latest true crime documentary from the streamer to take the internet by storm.
Mackenzie’s case is a fairly shocking one, with the at-the-time 17-year-old driving her car at 100 mph into a wall and killing her boyfriend Dominic Russo and his friend Davion Flanagan in the process. She was later arrested, charged, and found guilty of two counts of murder.
The documentary sees her give her first ever interview from behind bars, marking the first time she has publicly talked about the incident since being arrested.
Mackenzie and her parents have claimed she is innocent, with the now 21-year-old saying she has ‘excessive amounts of remorse for Dominic, Davion, both of their families’.

Clips have appeared online however of Mackenzie’s phone calls from inside prison, with those posting it saying it revealed the ‘real Mackenzie’.
Mackenzie is shown celebrating media coverage and her mum says she will be making a scrapbook

One clip, shared on TikTok, shows a phone call between Mackenzie and her mum Natalie Shirilla where they are discussing media coverage of the case.
Mackenzie is shown asking about the case being covered ‘all over the world’, with her mum informing her that ‘it was published in England’.
When she is told this Mackenzie responds by laughing, saying: “Yes! It’s world news… maybe Kim Kardashian will reach out herself.”
She says in other footage of the full call shared on YouTube channel Phone Calls from Prison that she wants her mum to ‘take all the screenshots’ of articles because it will be ‘crazy when I come out of here an innocent ass b*tch.’ Natalie adds that she is going to be making a scrapbook of the media coverage.
Mackenzie refers to herself as the ‘third victim’ of the crash in one phone call and discusses 'writing her book' when she gets out
In another phone call with a friend, Mackenzie says that she thinks the charges levied against her were ‘insane’.
She was charged and found guilty of two counts of murder, as well as a litany of charges including aggravated vehicle homicide and drug possession. Speaking in the call she says: “I would understand if they gave me like a normal charge, but like the charges that they gave me are literally insane.
“They're trying to make it seem something that it's not. I didn't do this on purpose, I got in a car accident, I’m a third victim.
“They just tried to make it seem like I was like this like abusive girlfriend to him but they didn't show anything he did to me.”
Mackenzie added that she doesn’t understand why she survived just to be arrested, adding: “I try to think that like damn, maybe there's like something good for me planned. Maybe like this is all a part of my story and then I'm going to write my book when I get out of here.”
One comment on TikTok said: “My mom would probably not even be talking to me she would be so mad with me. Certainly not laughing.”
Another said: “Wow!!!! To be laughing is crazy disrespectful!!!”
