Now, there are bizarre celebrity cross-overs all the time but they usually don't wind up in a heated fight complete with mouth guards, head protection gear and an array of blows.

People have been left beyond baffled after watching none other than Tory MP Matt Hancock fight former Premier League star Jermaine Pennant on TV.

And no - it wasn't just a random chance encounter. The pair both signed up to the fight for Channel 4's Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. Check it out:

Footage sees the pair really get stuck into it - having a brief tussle together before Pennant lands a thwack to Hancock before taking him down.

While chief instructor Mark 'Billy' Billingham dubbed the fisticuffs a 'reasonably pathetic fight', Pennant emerged as victor.

Pennant has since spilled the beans on his scrap with Hancock, who served as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care for three years,

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: "It’s called milling. It’s where you put your boxing gloves on and your hat and you have a box and I fought Matt Hancock.

"We’re not named, we're just numbers so they shouted out my number and they shouted out Matt’s and as I was getting ready I was thinking the nation is going to be seeing this, do not lose."

He added: "[I told myself] do not put it on the canvas. All you’ve got to do is just beat Matt Hancock and you’ll be a national hero."

Billingham also opened up on the scrap, saying Hancock 'got stuck in' and 'gave it 100 per cent'.

"The only thing is, he's a typical politician, won't give a straight answer," he added. "It took a while to dig into him, to get to the bottom of him and got quite annoying at times."

He added: "He got pushed through his paces and anytime he showed any attitude or any sort of fight back he really got pushed back."

The fight clip has since made its rounds across social media with many rushing in to share their reactions to the bizarre footage.

"This is not a serious country man," wrote one Twitter user.

A second penned: "Jermaine Pennant scrapping Matt Hancock is not what I expected to pop up my timeline out of nowhere."

A third chimed in: "I just tuned into Channel 4+1 to watch Matt Hancock get decked by Jermaine Pennant and it was the most random and brilliant thing I’ve seen in recent years."

"Never did I think I’d see Jermaine Pennant smash Matt Hancock one in the face," revealed a fourth.

Another echoed: "Never expected to see Jermaine Pennant fighting Matt Hancock on my telly tonight!"

A final Twitter user added: "Jermaine Pennant, having a boxing match with Matt Hancock, was never on my bingo card for 'weirdest things I've seen'."

That's for sure.
