Matthew McConaughey has spoken out about a possible return to True Detective alongside Woody Harrelson.

McConaughey starred alongside Harrelson in the first season of the anthology crime drama created by writer Nic Pizzolatto.

The pair, who have stated in the past they may even be half-brothers and that they were planning to take a DNA test, received widespread critical plaudits for the limited series.

McConaughey and Harrelson both received Emmy nominations for their performances with the show sitting at a whopping 8.9/10 on IMDb.

There have been three further seasons focused on different mysteries with fully new casts and, although they have been met with some success, the widespread opinion is that season two is far and away the best of the TV show.

As such, many fans will be ecstatic to learn that McConaughey has said he is more than open to returning to the show alongside Harrelson, even stating what his terms for a return would be.

The fresh comment comes following Nic Pizzolatto speaking in May about how he had a possible idea that could allow the pair to return to the show.

Pizzolatto, who was showrunner for the first three seasons of the show before handing over the reins to Issa Rae, appeared on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast when he announced that he had an idea for bringing back their characters Rust Cohle and Marty Harty.

Pizzolatto said: “I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that — who knows? — maybe we’ll do it one day.

“It’s character-based again. … But it’s not something I’ve written or anything.

“It’s just, I had that in my head. And we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to it.

“It’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.”

Asked about this in a new interview with NME, McConaughey said: “There’s excitement, yes, but I haven’t seen a script yet. When I read True Detective, everything that came out of Rust Cohle’s mouth was white-hot. The script was on fire so the execution [of a sequel] must go another step.

“We’re keen on the idea but it’s nothing more than an idea. If Nic puts something on paper that Woody and I think is good enough, it wouldn’t even be a choice.

“We would look at it and go, ‘it must happen’. It’s gotta be damn good though because we set a pretty good precedent.”

Fans were incredibly split on social media regarding the news, with one taking to X to say: “Mixed on this. On the one hand, it would be amazing to see them reunited and the story continue.

“On the other, True Detective Season One was the single best season of TV of any series. It was literally, perfect.

“Would you want that sullied by an inferior follow up? Probably not.”

Regardless, if they do decide to follow it up, fans everywhere will definitely be tuning in.
