Robbie Williams has received backlash after appearing to make a rather surprising faux pas during his entrance on The Graham Norton Show.

The 'Let Me Entertain You' singer was the musical guest on last night's (10 October) edition of the popular talk show to perform his latest single 'Pretty Face' ahead of the release of his first album in seven years.

He was then invited over to join fellow guests Julia Roberts, Colin Farrell, Gloria Estefan and Benedict Cumberbatch on the famous red sofa for a chat with Norton himself – however, his entrance appeared to cause a bit of controversy on social media.

After plonking himself down next to Roberts, the 51-year-old revealed that he's watched the actor's famous film Pretty Woman 'six times in a row' and promised to one day 'take a prostitute shopping'.

Which is of course a reference to Roberts' character in the 1990 romcom classic.

So what on Earth could Williams have done to get himself called out online?

Well, it's all down to the position he chose on the sofa.

Norton's decision to bring all of his guests out on the sofa at the same time is something which makes his talk show stand out amongst others, with many people believing the biggest guest of the night is seated at the top of the sofa and closest to the host.

There is of course no explicit rule stating this is the case, however last week's episode certainly appeared to follow this formula, with Taylor Swift and Cillian Murphy receiving the top spots.

Which is why several people were surprised to see Williams expect everyone else to move up the sofa and make space for him to sit down.

"Did Robbie just sit in the first position on the couch and make Julia Roberts scooch down," questioned one viewer on X.

"And then he shoved his ar*e on the sofa next to Julia Roberts as if he was top guest," added a second.

"Why did Robbie sit at that end of the sofa and NOT the end end! Have some respect," a third person wondered.

However, not everyone was aggrieved by Williams' move, with others pointing out that his time on the sofa provided extra entertainment for viewers at home.

"I know very little about Robbie Williams but he's certainly the consummate performer," read on person's summary of the episode.

Meanwhile, another user thought Williams had every right to a seat on the red sofa, writing: "Why is everyone on that couch at Graham Norton so awkward? Robbie Williams should have been a guest also not just performing the song."

LADbible has contacted Robbie Williams' representative for a comment.
