An underrated British spy thriller has returned to the small screen for its fourth season - and it's already received rave reviews.

The first episode of the new season has landed on Apple TV+ today (Friday September 6) and fans have taken to X to share their excitement.

Based on the legendary Slough House novels by author Mick Herron, the dark comedy drama follows the everyday grind of MI5 service rejects, AKA slow horses, who have been condemned to Slough House for messing up on the job - but not quite breaking any rules worthy of being fired.

One user took to the social media platform to write: “If Slow Horses aired on the BBC, it'd be the biggest show in the UK hands DOWN.”

Another commented, “Reminder that Slow Horses (on Apple TV+) continues to be absolutely bloody excellent and you should be addicted to it if you aren't already.” Whilst a third fan teased that the first episode is something to look forward to: “S04E01… Best TV episode. Ever... Gary Oldman is gold.

Slow Horses follows the misfits as they navigate the mundanities of everyday desk errands under the close eye of miserable, but brilliant, boss Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman). Somehow, the group winds up on the frontline, working overtime to stop plots that endanger Britain.

Spoilers ahead: Last season, we learned that a group of operatives had infiltrated MI5 and season four picks up where we left off - and doesn't hold back.

Season four is based on Herron’s novel Spook Street, and follows the life of River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) and his grandfather David (Jonathan Pryce). The pair become the target of a new enemy, as David’s time as an agent means he likely holds some pretty valuable information.

In the season four trailer, a bomb goes off at a London shopping centre, and Jackson declares one of his team dead - but who? We'll have to wait to find out.

It's not just Oldman that carries the show this season, as season four also stars the likes of small-screen heavyweights Kristin Scott Thomas, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, Kadiff Kirwan, and Aimee-Ffion Edwards.

Where can I watch Slow Horses season four?

The first episode of Slow Horses season four is now available to watch on Apple TV+. The remaining episodes will drop each week until the finale on Wednesday October 2.

Don’t worry if you don’t have Apple TV+, you can sign up for a free seven-day trial on the website - plenty of time to binge it.
