Fans urge people to watch 'best prison drama ever' some think is 'criminally underrated' available in UK

There's a prison drama series that we might all be missing out on and it has been labelled as 'criminally underrated' by fans.

Originally released in 2013, the TV show ran for eight seasons with its final season being split into two separate parts.

The tense series is highly rated by viewers and critics.

The series is set in modern day Australia, and is based on the soap opera Prisoner, that ran from 1979-1986.

In this contemporary re-imagining of the original, it follows prisoner Bea Smith, exploring her life as she has been sent to prison after being charged with the murder of her husband.

Separated from her daughter and sent to prison on remand, she must learn how to survive in prison as she awaits her trial.

Starting at the bottom of the 'food chain' in the prison, it follows Bea's development as she becomes more accustomed to life behind bars.

With eight seasons to binge and a rating of 8.6/10 on IMDb, fans of prison dramas like Netflix's Orange Is the New Black may just have struck gold.

The series is called Wentworth, and you can view the trailer for its first season here:

Wentworth became a hit not only in Australia, but in the UK, US and New Zealand too, though the former changed its name to Wentworth Prison.

It aired on Australian TV network SoHo from seasons one to four, switching to Fox Showcase for seasons five to eight.

The good news is that it is also now available to stream in the UK.

You can legally stream it for free (woohoo) on My5, Channel 5's online streaming platform.

As well as this, seasons one and three to eight are available to purchase on Prime Video, while just three are available with a subscription, and you can watch the entire series with a Sky Go subscription.

Danielle Cormack stars as Bea Smith in the hit series.

Fans of the show have left glowing reviews on IMDb, encouraging others to watch it too.

One fan said: "I absolutely loved Wentworth. I don't think I've ever been more surprised by how much I've liked a show quite like this one. Every episode of every season is good. It's addicting."

Another titled their review 'Blows Orange Is The New Black Out Of The Park!' - saying: "I thought Orange was a great tv show. Very well done with good flow. But let's be honest. Wentworth brings you the truth nitty gritty of a women's prison. This is Orange on drugs and set on fire."

A third put: "100% my most favourite TV series ever and I've seen a lot of TV series. It's gripping and gruesome with great storylines and acting. I will be disappointed the day that it ends as I look forward to this show airing each year, the most."

Wentworth is available to stream now on My5.
