Unbelievable story of how Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson might share same notorious hitman dad

Unbelievable story of how Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson might share same notorious hitman dad

Could Woody and Matthew be brothers?

In case you missed it, best buds and co-stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey suspect that they might be biological brothers.

After learning that Matthew's mum 'knew' (wink wink) Woody's dad back in the day, the two actors are starting to wonder if they're more alike than they realised.

As if this story isn't wild enough, if Matthew and Woody really are related, it'd mean that they both had a hitman for a father. I can already see the documentary coming.

Ok, let's take a step back here and look at the facts.

Woody Harrelson is the son of convicted murderer Charles Harrelson, who was handed two life sentences in 1982 for killing federal judge John H. Wood Jr.

The hitman had also been convicted for the murder of grain dealer Sam Degelia Jr, for which he served five years behind bars.

Woody doesn't speak too much about his dad, who passed away in prison in 2007, but he has said that Charles never really felt like a father to him.

"I don’t feel he was much of a father. He took no valid part in my upbringing," he once told People.

"This might sound odd to say about a convicted felon, but my father is one of the most articulate, well-read, charming people I’ve ever known.

"Still, I’m just now gauging whether he merits my loyalty or friendship. I look at him as someone who could be a friend more than someone who was a father."

Woody knew his dad was a hitman, but this could be a huge shock for Matthew.

Now, on to Matthew.

The Dallas Buyers Club star has spoken much more extensively about his dad - especially in his memoir Greenlights, where he wrote about his parents' rocky relationship.

In the book, McConaughey wrote about how his parents were married three times and divorced twice before his dad James passed away in 1992 of a heart attack - supposedly while he was having sex with Matthew's mother Mary.

But, just recently, Matthew learned that his dad might not be his dad at all, after his mum revealed that she once 'knew' Woody Harrelson's dad Charles.

"She says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew’. It was a loaded K-N-E-W," Matthew told the Let's Talk Off Camera podcast.

"We went on to unpack what this ‘knew’ meant and did some math and found out that [Woody Harrelson's] dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce.

“Then there’s possible receipts and places out in West Texas where there might have been a gathering, or a meeting, or a ‘knew’ moment."

While Woody has said he's up for taking a DNA test to get to the bottom of it, Matthew has his reservations.

"We want to go for a [DNA] test, but for him, it’s a much more big deal," Woody said in a recent interview.

"I mean he feels like he is losing a father. But I’m like, no, you’re gaining a different father and a brother."

Of course, it's not that simple.

Learning your dad was never really your dad, but, in fact, a convicted murderer who you never met was your dad instead would be hard news for anyone to hear.

Will Matthew eventually muster up the courage to find out if his best pal is actually his brother? Only time will tell.
