Man starts with $0.01 to see if he can trade his way to a house in just seven days

A content creator challenged himself to start with just a single penny in his pocket and to trade it up all the way to a house - within the space of a week.

YouTuber Ryan Trahan - who has over 18 million subscribers - is known for releasing some of the craziest videos on the platform.

From being in the world's loudest room to staying in the world's loneliest house, he takes on all sorts of challenges and millions are always keen to tune in to see what happens.

And this time, the American influencer gave himself the near impossible challenge of trading one penny into a home.

In a series of videos from 2022, Ryan tracked his progress, and in his first deal, he managed to trade the cent in for a pen.

Having told locals of his challenge, news outlets also picked up on it, and he went from a pen to a miniature blue dinosaur, up to half a box of mints worth $1.50.

He then managed to quadruple his money for a pair of wired headphones worth $8.

After putting up flyers across town, he got a vintage polaroid camera for his earphones at a garage sale, valued at $45.

Soon enough, two men randomly decided to trade him a pair of professional grade PA speakers for his polaroid.

He sold them for $200, making a nice $124.99 profit - but it wasn't enough and after seven days, he failed.

However, Ryan didn't give up and used the money to buy a car, which he eventually traded in for a house.

Although the property was seriously broken down inside, he made a promise to give his subscriber Hannah a home.

He kept that promise, and Shopify - who'd sponsored the video - bought her a ready-to-live-in house in Austin.

But Ryan ultimately decided to use the penny home for something else.

"Everyone I've met is responsible for this house that cost a penny and probably more with renovations," he said.

"But I was talking to Douglas off camera last week and we were chatting about life stuff and he said something that blew my mind.

"Our dreams are like pennies, they're pretty worthless on the surface probably dusty, probably ugly and most people throw them away or tuck them in their back pocket or drop them in the street.

"And every day you could probably walk outside and find dozens of dirty, abandoned pennies, so we have to be the ones who can see their potential, pick them up, dust them off and take them as far as we can."

Ryan then revealed that he would be donating the renovated home to a homeless charity to make good use of.
