Brits have been urged to return their old Amazon Fire TV Sticks in a limited-time offer that ends tonight.

Just days after announcing a major change in the rules around illegal streaming, Amazon is now urging shoppers to trade in their old fire stick and save 77 percent off its newest model.

The offer also applies to a range of Amazon devices such as the Echo Dot, Kindle E-Reader, and Ring Doorbell, but be warned: it ends at 23:59 tonight (Tuesday October 14).

Read on to find out how to take advantage of the offer...

The offer comes off the back of news that Amazon is making it harder to illegally stream content using 'dodgy boxes' and jailbroken Amazon Fire Sticks.

To combat the growing issue, Amazon recently launched the new Fire TV Stick Select (pre-order here), which does not support IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) services.

So, how can you trade in your old device, and how does it work? Find out everything you need to know below.

  • The smart home feature enables you to control compatible devices, whether you want to dim the lights or turn up the thermostat.

What are the new rules around streaming on Fire Sticks?

Last week, Amazon introduced its new Fire TV Stick 4K Select, which will run on a new in-house operating system called Vega - replacing the older Android-based system.

This change means it will be much harder, if not impossible, for hackers to install ‘sideloaded’ apps - software added outside of the official app store that often lets users access media for free or at a lower cost.

While sideloading might still be technically possible, experts say the new system could make it far less common. Many hackers are expected to move to non-Amazon devices to continue these underground activities.

Reports suggest that Amazon will begin disabling piracy-related apps that have been sideloaded. When this happens, users may see a warning message stating: 'This app has been disabled because it can put your device or personal data at risk,' according to TorrentFreak.

Amazon will reportedly label these apps as 'potentially harmful' rather than outright illegal, with upcoming Fire OS updates expected to include new user guidelines. Under the new Vega OS, traditional APK files (Android app packages) will no longer work, meaning developers will need to rebuild their apps specifically for Amazon’s new software, reports StreamDiag.
