What's the biggest city in the world?

That really depends on how you're slicing this particular wedge of cheese.

The pub quiz team champion in you probably wants to say the Japanese capital city of Tokyo with its 37 million people, but that's in the total metropolitan area and not the 'city proper' where about 13.5 million people live.

If we're just talking about the city proper then in terms of both population and space there's a clear winner on this list and you probably wouldn't be able to name it.

We'll save you the trouble of Googling it and tell you it's the Chinese city of Chongqing, which has a whopping 32 million people living there in a space which covers 82,403 square kilometres, which is also a lot of square miles.

The top 11 cities by size are all Chinese, and they occupy 17 of the top 20 spots as well.

In case you haven't been and aren't planning on visiting it any time soon, traveller Ben Morris made the trip to what he called 'China's cyberpunk mega-city' for a look around the place.

When he got there he found it to be a very hilly place, which is no surprise since it has the nickname of the 'mountain city' where the natural geographical features have been adorned with skyscrapers.

As the YouTuber walked around he came to a square and showed people just how high up he was, while it appeared as though he was down on the ground a quick camera angle actually showed that he was atop a skyscraper with a massive drop below, it's just that the city streets continue atop the buildings.

The man said it gave things an 'extremely trippy' feeling, though one hopes people don't trip over when they're this high up.

While travelling around Chongqing he met a man who said Ben could call him Michael, and the guy became his guide around the city.

Apparently, if you go to Chongqing then you simply must try their spicy hotpot.

They then watched a big light show, which had Ben saying he thought 'this is the closest I have ever felt to being in a real-life video game' and described the experience as 'just surreal'.

Ben dubbed watching the lights with Michael as his favourite moment in the trip, and couldn't believe he slept through it the night before.

Other attractions in Chongqing include the 'Capybara House', where you can go and chill out with the massive rodents who appear to tackle life with an admirably detached perspective.

By the way, if you want a point of reference for 82,403 square kilometres then it's just ever so slightly smaller than Austria, making the world's 'biggest city' the size of an entire country while having over three times the population.

Blimey.
